SciFinder Scholar 2006 is now available ­for PCs (the Mac version is coming later this fall). Download SciFinder Scholar 2006 using the installation instructions.

What’s new -

• Structure similarity searching - uses CAS structure descriptors and the Tanimoto algorithm to help you find structurally-related substances
• New structure and reaction query tools:
  • Variable Attachment Position tool - this tool allows you to define the attachment of a substituent to multiple points on a ring
  • Repeating Group tool - this tool allows you to specify variable chain lengths and ring sizes
• Query highlighting in reaction searching - allows for quick identification of query components in the reactions
• Easy access to additional reaction information - reaction answers can more easily allow you to access retro-synthetic information, commercial availability, regulatory information, and references for each compound participating in a reaction
• Enhanced multi-step reaction display - CAS generated multi-step reactions can now be expanded to see all intermediate steps in detail in a single view
• New quick look-up of research references - a new retrieval capability to locate a specific reference based on input of one to many known bibliographic attributes, such as title words, author, journal title, etc.
• Duplicate detection/removal - duplicate references can be removed from your CAplus and MEDLINE® reference answer set

Beginning Monday, September 19, the Libraries will host a series of special events to celebrate Libraries Week. This year’s events are coordinated around the theme, “Building Knowledge.” The MIT community is invited to take part in informal information sessions, snack breaks and activities such as photos with Tim the Beaver and a Geocache challenge. The MIT Libraries is pleased to announce a new tool to help you get to online full text fast!

The SFX FullText Finder: http://libraries.mit.edu/fulltext

If you have a citation to an article, simply type the information into this form and if the MIT Libraries has a subscription you will be given a link directly to the journal. If you have entered enough information, you should be brought directly to the article itself.

This tool will work from off-campus, assuming you already have MIT web certificates.

If the MIT Libraries does not have an online subscription to the journal, you will be presented with a link to run an auto-search of the Barton catalog to see if we own the journal in print. You will also be presented with a link to our Interlibrary Borrowing Service in case we do not own the journal at all.

The iPods are ready to circulate! The Lewis Music Library bought 5 iPods over the summer and loaded them with over 500 tracks of newly received CDs (one track per CD).

MIT students, faculty, or staff members may borrow an iPod overnight (due the next day at closing) for the purpose of listening to these sample tracks. If a selection appeals to you, jot down the call number from the iPod and come into the library to borrow the disc.

See the latest Selected New Titles: Compact Discs on the web where you will find audio clips from recently-received additions to the MIT Lewis Music Library’s CD collection.

CDs/DVDs circulate for 3 days to members of the MIT community (limit of 5, no renewals).
