PDF delivery from the Library Storage Annex
Looking for a journal article, conference proceeding, technical report or book chapter that’s in the Library Storage Annex?  Use the “Request PDF” button in the Barton catalog record to get PDF delivery to your desktop.  This service is free to members of the MIT community with an Illiad account.

Manage Your Research Data More Effectively

Printing, Copying and Scanning Improvements
Hayden, Barker, Dewey and Rotch Libraries are moving to TechCASH with new copiers and scanners. You’ll now be able to use TechCASH (MIT ID) to pay at copiers, print for free (MIT community only) through Athena printers, and make color scans that you can email or save to your USB drive. See the Printing FAQ and the TechCASH FAQ for more information.

Thanks to funding from CRSP, Dewey Library will receive a much-needed renovation beginning at the end of December. In response to community feedback, we are updating Dewey to make it a more functional and attractive place for students, faculty and staff to study and conduct research in management and social sciences. The library will remain open throughout the renovation.

To learn more about the renovation and the various ways in which you can communicate with us about the project, please visit the ReDew: Renovating Dewey Library website. ReDew will be updated regularly as the project progresses so that everyone can know what’s happening.

Vera is getting a makeover! In mid-August the old Vera interface will be retired and the new Vera Multi-Search will take its place. You can check out the new interface now: Vera Multi-Search

The new Vera Multi-Search will still help you quickly find electronic journals, databases, and e-books, but now it will also help you search for articles and papers within journals, conference proceedings, etc.

It uses what’s known as a “federated search” to search databases from different publishers’ sites at once, including Web of Science, Proquest Research Library, our own library catalog, Barton, and more. It then merges the results and presents them to you in the Vera Multi-Search interface. When you click on a title, you are linked back to the publisher’s site that contains the full text of that article.

SciFinder is now also available on the web.  The traditional downloadable “client” version will continue to be available, but will be phased out over the next 6-10 months.

Follow the instructions to register for the web version.

The MIT Libraries subscription allows a total of eleven (11) simultaneous users between the web (one-time registration required) and the client versions.  Those 11 “seats” have been divided between the two versions.   If one version reports that all seats are taken, please try again later or try the other version.

On August 1, new copiers were installed in Barker, Dewey, Hayden, and Rotch Libraries. Most of the older copiers have been removed, though one old copier remains in each of these libraries that still accepts the old Copy Cards. The new copiers will require TechCASH, Guest TechCASH, or new Copy/Print Only TechCASH cards for payment for copying and outside user printing.

MIT community: Copying will cost $.10 per page when paid for with TechCASH through an MIT ID.

MIT users without TechCASH can create TechCASH accounts at any time through the TechCASH web site. https://techcash.mit.edu [note different address for the MIT community, with the "https" at the beginning ]

Guest TechCASH for MIT visitors: Copying and printing will cost $.15 per page with Guest TechCASH. Guest TechCASH can be used anywhere on campus where TechCASH is accepted, (e.g. La Verde’s, Forbes Coffee, etc. ) Value can be added to Guest TechCASH cards at any time with a credit card through the Guest TechCASH web site. http://guest.techcash.mit.edu/ [note different address from above, and that the URL begins with "http" rather than "https"]

Copy/Print Only TechCASH cards: Users with balances of greater than $10.00 (100 copies) can roll over copies from the existing (old) copy card system, Copies will be put on Copy/Print Only TechCASH cards. These cards are only valid in the MIT Libraries, and will expire June 30, 2009. Departments that want to purchase copies for a group to use will be issued Copy/Print Only TechCASH cards. An old copier will be maintained in Barker, Dewey, Hayden, and Rotch until October 31, 2008. Anyone with an old copy card can continue to make copies with one of these older copiers until October 31.

In July 1965 MIT Professor of Electrical Measurements Harold “Doc” Edgerton produced a batch of multiflash baseball photos and sent them to long-time colleague Vannevar Bush for comment. The Archives’ August Object of the Month exhibit includes Bush’s response, in which he records his thoughts about the physics of baseball, and a page from Edgerton’s notebook showing two of the baseball pictures (Bush’s letter and Edgerton’s notebook from the Harold E. Edgerton Papers - MC 25).

The papers of Bush (MC 78) as well as those of Edgerton are available for use in the Institute Archives and Special Collections, 14N-118.

Today two of the largest providers of open source software for managing and providing access to digital content, the DSpace Foundation and Fedora Commons, announced plans to combine strengths to work on joint initiatives that will more closely align their organizations’ goals and better serve both open source repository communities in the coming months.

This advance comes as institutions such as universities, libraries, museums and research laboratories worldwide are focused on utilizing open source software solutions for the dissemination and preservation of scholarly, scientific, and cultural heritage digital content into the future. Making books, articles, films, music, large and small data sets, scholarly works, multi-media, learning objects and mash-ups from all parts of the globe discoverable and accessible is at the core of the DSpace and Fedora collaboration.

The collaboration is expected to benefit over 500 organizations from around the world who are currently using either DSpace (examples include MIT, Rice University, Texas Digital Library and University of Toronto) or Fedora (examples include the National Library of France, New York Public Library, Encyclopedia of Chicago and eSciDoc) open source software to create repositories for a wide variety of purposes. Due to the ongoing demolition of the plaza in front of E53, an alternate entrance into the building and Dewey Library is in effect.

To enter the building:

• Take the temporary ramp from Wadsworth Street (to the right of the plaza) down to the garage level.
• Follow the signs which point you to the left towards the basement door to enter E53.
• From there, take either the elevator or the stairs to the 1st floor lobby of E53, where you can enter Dewey Library.

This detour will be in effect until sometime in the fall.

The latest in the series of podcasts on scholarly publication and copyright is an interview with Dan Ariely, who was Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavioral Economics here at MIT, until very recently, when he moved to Duke University, where he is now James B. Duke Professor of Behavioral Economics.

Professor Ariely recently published the best-selling book Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces that Shape our Decisions, in which he undermines any notion we might have that humans make “rational” decisions. His book reports on his research showing that emotions, context, social norms, and related factors drive our decisions – and that we are irrational in predictable ways.

In the podcast, Professor Ariely speaks with us about how market and social norms intersect with authors’ decision-making in an evolving system of scholarly communication and publishing. He discusses reward systems, the importance of building an accessible community of knowledge, and the need to lower barriers for information sharing.

The faculty of the Stanford University School of Education voted unanimously “in support of greater openness in scholarly and educational endeavors,” by adopting a policy June 10 that will require all of the faculty’s scholarly articles to be available openly on the web.

This move is the first by a School of Education, and follows similar policies, aslo adopted by unanimous votes, by the Harvard Faculty of Arts & Sciences (February) and the Harvard Law School (April).

The policy will give Stanford University a license to post the Education School faculty’s articles online at no cost to readers; as with the Harvard policies, waivers may be requested and will be granted.

The policy emerges “in recognition of [Stanford University School of Education's] responsibility to make its research and scholarship as widely and publicly available as possible” and commits the faculty to “taking advantage of new technologies to increase access to its work among scholars worldwide, educators, policymakers, and the public.”

The Barker Engineering Library is reorganizing its collections this summer to create room for the growth of book collections and to provide better access to materials.

In recent years, the Engineering and Science Libraries have greatly increased their electronic journal subscriptions. As a result of increased digital access, many of the print equivalents were moved to the Library Storage Annex (LSA). The space gained as a result of the collection move will allow Barker to rearrange collections, creating room for long-term growth.

Additionally, Barker’s journal collection will no longer be organized alphabetically by title. Instead, the collection has been given call numbers, which now appear in Barton, the Libraries’ online catalog. The new classification will make it easier to find the volume you need on the shelf.

The journal collection is currently being moved to its new location on the 8^th floor, in its new call number order. If you have any questions during the reorganization, please ask for assistance at the service desk.

On June 14, 1916, approximately 1,500 alumni/ae along with special guests, including Alexander Graham Bell and Orville Wright, gathered at Symphony Hall in Boston to celebrate the new MIT campus in Cambridge and to raise funds. The speeches presented that night were broadcast via telephone to 34 alumni gatherings all over the country. The June Object of the Month exhibit on the web site of the Institute Archives and Special Collections includes photographs, the banquet program and menu, and links to other events surrounding MIT’s move from Boston to Cambridge. Visit the Archives in 14N-118 to learn more about this momentous milestone in the history of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Take advantage of a few extra days when you borrow music CDs, DVDs, and iPods over the summer! Since the Lewis Music Library will be closed Saturdays and Sundays beginning Memorial Day weekend, these items can be borrowed for a longer period of time over the weekend. This means:

• CDs and DVDs circulate for 3 days, but if you borrow them on a Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday, they are due the following Monday (by closing, 5 pm).
• iPods circulate overnight, but during the summer an iPod borrowed on a Friday will be due on Monday.

The faculty of the Harvard Law School has voted unanimously to make articles authored by faculty members available in an open online repository. This is the first law school to commit to open access for its authors’ work.

As reported in the Harvard Law School news, Dean of the Law School Elena Kagan explains the motivation of the vote as a “decision to embrace ‘open access’” that “means that people everywhere can benefit from the ideas generated here at the Law School.”

“The acceptance of open access ensures that our faculty’s world-class scholarship is accessible today and into the future,” reports John Palfrey, the Executive Director of the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School and Vice Dean of library and information resources, in the same news story.

This vote follows that of the Harvard Faculty of Arts & Sciences, which adopted a similar mandate in February 2008, also by a unanimous vote.
